Cupping therapy is an ancient healing technique with roots in Eastern medicine. This practice dates back thousands of years and was used by ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern cultures. The principle behind cupping is to use suction to draw blood to the surface, promoting better circulation, and facilitating the body's natural healing processes.
Cupping therapy offers numerous benefits, particularly when combined with other therapeutic techniques like Gua Sha, massage, and corrective exercise.
Negative Pressure for Decompression: Cupping lifts and separates tissue layers to stimulate physiologic changes which improves nutrient delivery and fluid exchange. There has also been MRI research that shows cupping can decompress deep muscle tissues for extended periods of time.
Enhanced Circulation: Cupping helps increase blood flow to specific areas, which can expedite the healing of muscles and tissues.
Pain Relief: By reducing muscle tension and improving blood flow, cupping can provide significant pain relief.
Relaxation: The process can be deeply relaxing, reducing stress and anxiety.
When combined with Gua Sha, massage, and corrective exercise, cupping therapy's benefits are amplified. Gua Sha, another ancient technique, involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to improve soft tissue quality and function. Massage further enhances these effects by manually manipulating muscles and tissues to reduce tension and promote relaxation. Finally, adding corrective exercises make these effects last even longer by teaching the tissues and muscles to move in a more efficient manner.
Together, these therapies create a holistic approach to wellness, targeting both the surface and deeper layers of tissue to provide comprehensive relief.
If you're new to cupping therapy, here's what you can expect during a session:
Preparation: I will begin by explaining the process and ensuring you're comfortable. I will identify the areas to be treated based on your specific needs. In most instances I will perform massage followed by Gua Sha and finish off with cupping therapy to create some decompression in the area.
Application of Cups: I will place plastic cups on your skin and use a hand pump to create a vacuum inside the cups. This will cause your skin to rise and redden as blood vessels expand.
Duration: I will typically leave the cups on for 5 minutes but will sometimes leave them on for longer while I perform massage or Gua Sha on another part of your body. During this time, you might feel a tight sensation where the cups are placed, but it should not be painful and should dissipate with time.
Post-Treatment: After removing the cups, you may notice circular marks on your skin. These marks are not bruises but rather a sign of blood vessel expansion and will fade within a few days.
To perform cupping therapy at home, start by spreading a generous amount of lotion or oil on the area to be cupped. This helps the cup move smoothly and ensures a good seal. Use the pump to create the appropriate amount of suction, making sure it feels firm but not painful. Leave the cup in place for about 5 minutes, keeping an eye on the area to monitor for any adverse reactions. If you notice any welts or significant discomfort, remove the cup immediately. It's important to give the treated area 1-2 days of rest between sessions to allow your skin and muscles to recover. If you have any questions about self-cupping or any other treatments you can do at home please feel free to call or email me!
Here is a Cupping Set I recommend. If you do not like the magnets you can easily take them out of the cups. I also have some silicone cups that I'm happy to loan out if you'd like to try cupping on your own, just reach out!
